What's New in Survey Crafter Professional

Survey Crafter Professional has the following new features and enhancements.

Survey Crafter Professional 4.0

Release 4.0 contains many exciting improvements to the Survey Designer and Data windows as well as the new batch report feature.

Improved/New Survey Features
  • The new survey explorer toolbar.
Use the Survey Designer window's new survey explorer toolbar to manage the blocks, imported variables, custom rules, survey fields, bookmarks and hyperlink targets in your survey. For example, when you click on a custom rule in the toolbar, Survey Crafter Professional navigates to and highlights the block that is associated with the rule in the Survey Designer window. You can also use the toolbar to drag and drop as well as copy and paste blocks, custom rules and survey fields.
  • Improved Question Block Wizard.
The Survey Designer window's Question Block Wizard has been reorganized and new features have been added. For example, you can now specify the minimum and/or maximum number of prompts you want respondents to select when answering an all-that-apply question.
  • Automatically number questions inside blocks that contain multiple questions.
You can now have Survey Crafter Professional automatically number the questions inside blocks that contain multiple questions. You can specify the starting number and choose one of the following schemes: roman numeral, arabic number or letter.
  • Repeat prompt headings for each question inside blocks that contain multiple questions.
You can now have Survey Crafter Professional repeat the prompt headings for each question inside blocks that contain multiple questions.
  • Associating numbers with rating question prompts.
In Survey Crafter Professional, each prompt in a rating question has a number associated with it. When a respondent answers a rating question, the number associated with the chosen prompt is stored. You can now choose how you want the numbers associated with the prompts. For example, you can choose to associate 1 with the first prompt, 2 with the second, and so on. Alternatively, you can choose to associate N with the first prompt, N-1 with the second, and so on, where N is the number of prompts. Finally, you can associate your own numbers with the prompts.
  • Minimum and/or maximum number of prompts to select for all-that-apply questions.
You can now use the Question Block Wizard to specify a minimum and/or maximum number of prompts you want respondents to select when answering an all-that-apply question. Respondents are notified when the rule is not followed. If you want, you can give respondents an option to continue anyway. Otherwise, respondents are prevented from continuing until their answers follow the rule.
  • Exclusive prompts for all-that-apply questions.
You can now use the Question Block Wizard to designate the last one or more prompts of an all-that-apply question as exclusive. An exclusive prompt is a prompt that a respondent is allowed to choose only when she has chosen no other prompt. Examples of exclusive prompts are all of the above, none of the above, refused, etc.
  • Minimum and/or maximum number of prompts to rank for ranking questions.
You can now use the Question Block Wizard to specify a minimum and/or maximum number of prompts you want respondents to rank when answering a ranking question. Respondents are notified when the rule is not followed. If you want, you can give respondents an option to continue anyway. Otherwise, respondents are prevented from continuing until their answers follow the rule.
  • Minimum and/or maximum number of prompts to distribute points to for constant sum questions.
You can now use the Question Block Wizard to specify a minimum and/or maximum number of prompts you want respondents to distribute points to when answering a constant sum question. Respondents are notified when the rule is not followed. If you want, you can give respondents an option to continue anyway. Otherwise, respondents are prevented from continuing until their answers follow the rule.
  • Describing 'other' when 'other' is chosen and vice-versa.
You can now use the Question Block Wizard to have respondents describe what they mean when they select 'other' when answering a closed-end, all-that-apply or rating question. Respondents are notified when the rule is not followed. If you want, you can give respondents an option to continue anyway. Otherwise, respondents are prevented from continuing until their answers follow the rule.
  • Height and width of the 'other' box.
You can now specify the height and width of the boxes for the open-end questions that are associated with the 'other' prompts for closed-end, rating and all-that-apply questions.
  • Password option for one-row open-end questions.
You can now have the built-in Interviewer and the web browser hide what the respondent types in the box for a one-row open-end question.
  • Improved Custom Rules dialog box.
Rules are now listed in the Custom Rules dialog box in an order that follows the blocks in the survey.
  • New Survey Designer window status bar.
The Survey Designer window now has a status bar that displays the current page, line and column numbers.
  • Improved New Survey Wizard.

  • New block layouts.
There are 12 new survey question block layouts, increasing the total to 156 different block layouts. The new block layouts [O19], [R19] and [M19] are for blocks that contain one closed-end, rating or all-that-apply question. Block layouts [O69], [R69], [M69], [O70], [R70], [M70], [O71], [R71] and [M71] are for blocks that contain multiple closed-end, rating or all-that-apply questions.
Improved/New Data Features

You can now have Survey Crafter Professional automatically move new records from the built-in Interviewer to the Data window and save the study as you enter new records. You can specify how many records you want to enter before the records are moved and saved.
  • Variables listed in the order they appear in the surveys.
You can now have Survey Crafter Professional maintain the list of variables in the Data window in the order the variables appear in the surveys. Variables not associated with any question blocks are sorted alphabetically by name and listed after the variables associated with question blocks.
  • Deleting variables from the Data window.
You can now delete variables from the Data window.
  • Improved Show/Hide Variables dialog box.
The Data window's Show/Hide Variables dialog box has been reorganized.
Improved/New Variable Features
  • Improved Category to Weights variable wizard.
You can now have the Category to Weights variable wizard's weighting calculation use a subset of the respondents in the data set.
Improved/New Analysis Features
  • New batch reports.
The new batch report feature allows you to list a series of analysis tables and charts to print or export together as one report. You can very quickly design a batch report that includes analysis tables and charts for every question in your survey.
  • New list expression language functions.
4 new extension functions (LIST_INDEX, LIST_RANDOMIZE, LIST_REVERSE, and LIST_ROTATE) allow you to use Survey Crafter Professionalís expression language to further manipulate and analyze lists.
  • Easier access to the Expression Library.
In many dialog boxes, a button for the Expression Library has been added next to the Expression Builder button. In a few dialog boxes, a list of expressions from the Expression Library now appears below the expression box. Clicking on an expression in the list has Survey Crafter Professional replace the expression in the box with the one from the library.
  • Improved analysis wizard dialog boxes.
All variables in the analysis wizard dialog boxes are listed in a more compact way. You can now see more variables on the screen without scrolling.
